Ingeniero y geólogo inglés, conocido como el fundador de la ciencia de la estratigrafía. Hijo de un herrero, fue un autodidacta. Produjo el primer mapa geológico de Inglaterra y Gales (1815), estableciendo el estilo que seguirían los mapas geológicos modernos y a continuación una serie de mapas geológicos de los condados ingleses. Introdujo muchas técnicas aún en uso, como la utilización de fósiles para la datación de estratos. Los actuales mapas geológicos de Inglaterra difieren de los suyos principalmente en el nivel de detalle y aún se usan muchos de los pintorescos nombres que aplicó a los estratos.
